Traveling Mercies

Friday I experienced both the frustration and the grace of healthcare workers. Frustration because my retired surgeon’s office couldn’t manage to schedule an ultrasound for two weeks and grace because my radiation oncologist intervened and with one call got me a call from the ultrasound scheduler. The scheduler was apologetic because she knew I’d been waiting on an appointment. She said she only had one “add-on” time left–Wednesday at 3:30. I told her that was perfect, right after radiation, one of the few times that my two appointments in one-day didn’t require two trips across town. When she said, “Thank God, it was meant to be” she quickly recanted and said, “I shouldn’t say that, you might not be religious.” When I told her I was pastor, she said, “Well then it was meant to be.”
